To learn individual parts for concert/wind ensemble music and pep band music. 2. To earn experience in ensemble sight reading. 3. To gain experience in aural and instrumental skills. 4. To build towards an overall better ensemble from beginning to end of year. Course Expectations: 1. Learn music as efficiently as possible so the music can be freely interpreted by instructor. 2. Be prepared to play to the best of your ability every day of rehearsal. 3. Practice all literature distributed by instructor for concerts. 4. Remain quiet and respectful when the instructor is talking to any member, section, or entire ensemble. Course Procedure: 1. Be respectful of others in the classroom. 2. Help create an environment conducive to learning. 3. Bring all required material to class. 4. No food or drinks of any kind are allowed in the classroom. ** Disciplinary actions will be followed as stated in the student handbook Grading Policy: Attendance (Lessons and Rehearsals): 50% Performance Exams: 25% Ear Training Assignments: 25% Attendance: Lessons = 10 points per week Pep Band Games = 50 points per game Concert Performance = 100 points per concert IMPORTANT NOTE: Inform the instructor within 2 weeks after the schedule has been handed out to notify of any problems that will occur to avoid a loss of the grade. Extenuating circumstances will be taken into account for missed rehearsals/performances. *Proper attire for Concerts- Men: Black Pants, Black socks, Black Shoes, Button-up collared shirt (White preferred) Women: Black Pants or Dress (past the knees when sitting, NO EXCEPTION!), Black hoes, Black Shoes, Button-up collared shirt (White preferred) Materials: These are the expected materials to bring to class EVERYDAY: Pencil Music Instrument Instrument accessories (mutes, maintenance items, etc.) A positive attitude
Performance Exams: Every quarter, the instructor will listen to either a lesson section or individuals. The material to be prepared for will be selected from: a) A prepared etude out of a lesson book (individuals only) b) Scales c) All literature that is being prepared for concerts d) Sight Reading Lesson Sections that are graded will receive one overall grade for every member. Ear Training Assignments: Students are asked to pick a piece of music that was composed before 1950, listen to it, and to write a one page paper on the music. Discussion topics will include: use of dynamics, phrasing, instrumentation, texture, musicality, style, etc. Students are required to do 3 papers per semester. 3 papers equals an A, 2 equals a B, 1 equals a C, 0 equals an F. The papers will be graded satisfactory or unsatisfactory based upon quality, structure, and syntax. This is a project that will help the students better learn about the different types of music that we will be playing in band. The more we listen to music, the better musicians we become. Dress Rehearsals: Dress Rehearsals are required for all students. They are always the night before a concert and serve two purposes: 1) allows for set up of concert the day before, and 2) gives the students an idea of what the room sounds like. Call Times: Call times will always be 1 hour before the start time on the schedule (Example: Tip-off for game is 7:00 pm, be in the band room for warm-up at 6:00 pm). Tardiness will count against your attendance grade. Student Right’s in Band: You have the right to: Learn Ask for individual help Give ideas for music (outside class time) Listen to teacher’s instruction Teacher Right’s in Band: I have the right to: Teach Hand out discipline when rules/expectations are broken Help individuals when necessary Lead a strong ensemble of musicians to successful performances |
